Zug Bug   

Zug Bugs suggest many different insects, including cased caddis and free-living caddis larvae. Besides, anything with peacock herl is a good fly to have in your box.

Hook:

5262 or 3761, sizes 10-14; weighted Nymph, 1X or 2x long; sizes 8 to 14

Thread:

Black

Tail:

5-8 fibers of peacock sword

Rib:

Oval Silver Tinsel

Abdomen:

Peacock Herl

Legs:

Brown or furnace hackle, beard-style

Wing-case:

Mallard dyed woodduck breast cut short 1/4 the body length

Weighted:

Lead wire underbody can be added for weight.

 

Tying Instructions

  1. Start thread towards rear of hook. Tie in 3 strands of peacock sword for tail.

  2. If you choose to use lead wire to weight the hook, wrap it on now.

  3. Tie in silver tinsel and 3-4 strands of peacock herl.

  4. Wind thread forward. Hold peacock herl together with hackle pliers and twist together. Wrap forward and tie off.

  5. Wrap silver tinsel forward. Tie in soft hackle, wrap 2-3 times and tie off.

  6. Tie mallard over top of hook, over hackle. Tie off, wrapping a little towards rear to create a beard.

  7. Form head, whip finish and cement.

Presentation
Fish as you would any nymph - casting, drifting, and stripping the fly in. Can be used as a dropper with a dry fly.
  Dead drift near the bottom with the indicator or tight line presentation.
